Choral Contemplations XI - Exploring the Memorial Chapel at the University of Glasgow
This evening, we explore the interior of the Memorial Chapel. This concert was conceived as a partner to our first Choral Contemplations of the academic session, when we explored the architecture and acoustics of the West Quadrangle at the university. Tonight, we hope to illuminate what to many of us is a familiar space, highlighting through choral and organ music particular elements of design within the chapel, its fittings and fixtures. It is fair to say that we are barely able to scratch the surface this evening, and I am certain that we will revisit this concept in the future.
During the concert, we will encourage you to move around the space with us a little, in order to be in the best possible position to hear the music, and to examine some of the architectural and design features we will be focussing on. Below you will find hi-resolution images to accompany the concert. |
'The design was the work of Sir John Burnet and recalls the early Gothic period to blend in with Sir George Gilbert Scott's main building. The figures of Scottish saints around the pulpit are the work of Walter Gilbert and the remaining wooden carvings were designed by Archibald Dawson. The windows were designed and made by Douglas Strachan.' (https://www.universitystory.gla.ac.uk/chapel/) |
Many thanks for joining us this evening. We warmly invite you to join us for refreshments, when we will also project all the images below.
