Chaos I
*You can have fewer or greater groups of singers than 3.

- Choose 3* hymns from any hymn book. These can be in related or unrelated keys, and any length. You can choose similar texts or contrasting ones.
- Assign a hymn to a third* of your choir and ensure they are confident on any harmony lines you choose to perform (this is at your discretion). You should choose just one verse for the group to sing repeatedly – this can be any verse of the hymn. Each group should have their own conductor/lead singer.
- With each group standing in different areas of the performance space, signal for group 1 to start (led by their own leader). At a time of your choosing, signal for group 2 to start. And some time later, group 3.
- Once all groups are singing, the group leaders should stop conducting and all singers should move to a central performance position, continuing to sing their own material, but not necessarily trying to keep in time with their group.
- At a point of your choosing, end the piece – there are various ways to do this
- Indicate that you’re about to stop and give a clear indication to hold the chord.
- Hold up 1, 2 or 3 fingers to indicate which choirs should stop (for example, holding up all three fingers means all three choirs sing, two would mean choir 1 and 2 continue singing, 1 would mean just choir 1 continue singing – you can come up with your own system.
- Start to show a pulse so that the group come together ‘in time’ (although obviously not necessarily at a time that makes sense within their group!)
- Any other way you choose.
